Wrexham's dream of a historic fourth consecutive promotion is over after a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough at the SToK Cae Ras. Phil Parkinson's side needed victory to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive but will now finish seventh in the Sky Bet Championship. Hull's 2-1 win over Norwich sealed sixth place and condemned Wrexham to missing out on the play-offs.

Tommy Conway put Boro ahead after just four minutes, converting from close range after Callum Brittain's cross. Josh Windass equalised with a stunning 30-yard strike for his 17th goal of the season, before Sam Smith headed Wrexham back in front. David Strelec levelled matters just before half-time, and neither side could find a winner despite several late chances in an entertaining second half.

Middlesbrough secured fifth place and will face Southampton in the play-off semi-finals, with the first leg at the Riverside Stadium on May 9. The final takes place at Wembley on May 23. Wrexham's remarkable rise from National League football three years ago to finishing seventh in the Championship caps an impressive season, though promotion will have to wait.
