Verstappen blames strategy for missed Austrian GP victory over Russell

Max Verstappen believes Red Bull's tactical decisions cost him the Austrian Grand Prix win, finishing 1.6 seconds behind George Russell after an 11-second deficit from his final pit stop. The Dutchman closed within one second of Russell before the pit sequence, but Mercedes' early stop with 28 laps remaining forced Red Bull into an extended stint strategy.

Red Bull arrived in Austria with a major upgrade package that transformed their competitiveness. Prior to Sunday, Verstappen had managed only one podium finish in Canada and consistently lagged behind Mercedes' pace. Team principal Laurent Mekies acknowledged the improvements, crediting the Milton Keynes team for finding over one second of pace in recent races.

The Austrian result marked Red Bull's first genuine victory challenge of 2026, with Verstappen noting his tyre degradation was better than Russell's during the closing laps. However, chassis balance and grip issues have plagued the RB22 throughout the season, despite Red Bull's new power unit partnership with Ford.

Mekies described the upgrade as a step forward, though he emphasized Red Bull still needs more development to consistently challenge for wins. The team showed encouraging pace improvements, suggesting they can fight for podiums again at Silverstone's upcoming Sprint weekend.
