Stokes to bowl new ball for Durham

Ben Stokes will make his first appearance since the Ashes against Worcestershire on Friday, with Durham considering unleashing the England captain as a new-ball strike bowler. His return has been delayed after a stray ball to the face required reconstructive surgery, following previous issues with his shoulder and groin.

Durham head coach Ryan Campbell confirmed Stokes will bowl "100 per cent" and could lead the attack in place of departed West Indian seamer Kemar Roach. Campbell revealed Stokes might go with the new ball, though they'll limit him to around 20-25 overs per game. Stokes topped England's wicket-taking charts last year with 33 scalps at 23.12.

England has desperately needed a new ball specialist since the retirements of James Anderson, Stuart Broad, and Chris Woales. While Durham's stance offers an intriguing chance to see Stokes in that role, Campbell insists the all-rounder is there to help Durham win cricket matches, not to prepare for England.
