Solar eclipse: Floodlights on for UK sports events

Floodlights will be turned on throughout games in The Hundred on Wednesday due to the solar eclipse. Up to 90 per cent of the sun will be obscured by the moon during the eclipse, which will occur between 6.17pm and 8.06pm, peaking shortly after 7pm. It will be the first partial solar eclipse for 27 years and will be visible across Europe.

The light will dim, temperature will drop, and wind may change direction as the sun disappears. There are four games in The Hundred on Wednesday: Welsh Fire women face London Spirit at 11.30am, men at 3pm; Birmingham Phoenix women host MI London at 3pm, men at 6.30pm. Organisers will keep floodlights on throughout all four matches and issue additional messaging to fans.

Kempton is also staging racing during the eclipse. Clerk of the course Barney Clifford said they will put floodlights on early. Races are scheduled at 7pm and 7.30pm, during the eclipse. Experts warn only certified solar eclipse glasses should be used to view the eclipse.
