Jamie Smith marked his return with a century as Surrey secured a draw with Warwickshire in the County Championship opener. Smith scored 132 batting at No 3, pairing with Dan Lawrence (161) for 217 runs to rescue Surrey despite trailing by 47 runs at the start of day four after Warwickshire's massive first-innings total of 544.

Division One saw three draws and one decisive result as Sussex wrapped up a 222-run victory over Leicestershire. The win proves valuable for Sussex, who overcame a 12-point deduction from the ECB with the victory, putting them now 10 points to the good. Henry Crocombe took sensational match figures of 9-69.

James Anderson's Lancashire narrowly missed out on victory in his first match as captain, falling just one wicket short against Northamptonshire. Anderson removed two batsmen to put his side within one ball of victory, but George Bartlett's 95 not out saved Northamptonshire. In Division Two, Middlesex triumphed by an innings and 14 runs over Gloucestershire.
