Sabalenka vs Osaka breaks three‑year women’s night slot drought at Roland‑Garros

Roland‑Garros will host a women's night‑session match for the first time in three years on Monday, pitting world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka against former world No 1 Naomi Osaka. Both boast four Grand Slam crowns, and their fourth‑round clash arrives as the tournament’s prime‑time slot has been dominated by men’s singles since its 2021 introduction.

Critics have repeatedly targeted Amélie Mauresmo for reserving the evening slot almost exclusively for men. Since the session’s debut in 2021, only four of the first 60 night matches featured women, and none have aired since 2023. The sudden exits of Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz in the second round left a programming gap significantly that the Sabalenka‑Osaka duel now fills.

Jessica Pegula and Ons Jabeur publicly decried the scheduling bias, arguing that Grand Slam events should offer equal exposure. WTA chief Valerie Camillo met Mauresmo at Roland‑Garros, urging a stronger women’s presence. Osaka, accustomed to night matches at the US Open, remarked she “doesn’t associate” the French Open with evening play on television for fans, effectively ending a run of 33 straight men’s evening matches.
