Sabalenka threatens Grand Slam boycott over prize money split

World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka warned that players may have to boycott Grand Slam events unless their share of tournament revenues rises. Speaking before the Italian Open, she said the sport’s stars generate the entertainment that fuels the events and therefore deserve a larger cut. Sabalenka and men’s leader Jannik Sinner joined dozens of top‑10 players in a joint statement expressing deep disappointment overall with French Open prize money and the broader issue of player welfare.

French organisers announced a 10 % increase, lifting the total pot to £53.5m, up £4.6m from the previous year. Players counter that their revenue share is slipping, projecting a drop from 15.5 % in 2024 to 14.9 % by 2026. The petition also calls for improved pensions, health benefits and a formal consultation process on scheduling and curfew policies.

Among the signatories are women's champions Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff and Madison Keys, and men such as Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud. While Swiatek urged dialogue over extreme measures, Sabalenka maintains that a boycott may become the only leverage left. The standoff puts pressure on the four Slams to renegotiate the financial split before the next season begins.
