Rangers have secured former Everton centre‑back Ben Godfrey on a season‑long loan from Serie A side Atalanta, with an option to sign him permanently next summer. The 28‑year‑old completed his medical on Sunday, becoming the club’s third summer arrival after striker Lawrence Shankland and midfielder Ross Mc Crorie. The agreement also contains a trigger clause for a permanent move next summer.

Godfrey’s move follows a series of short‑term spells; after leaving Everton in summer 2024 he joined Atalanta but spent time on loan at Ipswich, Sheffield United and Brøndby. He expressed excitement, saying he feels ‘buzzing’ to wear the Rangers shirt and hopes to help the side chase silverware this campaign. His versatility gives McInnes tactical flexibility in a league where defence matters.

Manager Derek Mc Innes praised Godfrey’s pedigree, noting his Premier League experience and England involvement add depth to a back line that struggled with injuries last season. If he starts, Rangers tighten a leak that hurt them last season as the Scottish Premiership kicks off.
