Premier League Set-Piece Wars: Arsenal Dominates, Liverpool Lags

Set-piece goals are surging across the Premier League, with non-penalty dead-ball goals rising 50% since 2020/21. This shift reflects a broader tactical move as managers chase 'low-hanging fruit' for scoring advantages. The trend has transformed training ground priorities, pushing specialized coaching from rarity to necessity.

Arsenal leads the pack with 14 non-penalty set-piece goals, thanks largely to Nicolas Jover's influence. They favor inswinging corners targeting the six-yard box, creating chaos for keepers. Liverpool sits at the opposite extreme, scoring just three set-piece goals while conceding 13, highlighting a glaring weakness in both execution and defensive structure.

The divergence stems from delivery choices. Arsenal sends 58% of corners into the six-yard area using inswingers, which statistically yield more goals. Liverpool prefers outswingers, landing just 36% of deliveries in dangerous spots. Analyst Jamie Carragher blames their zonal marking for defensive lapses, leaving space for second-ball strikes by opponents.
