Palou Ordered to Pay McLaren £9M for Contract Breach

Four-time IndyCar champion Alex Palou has been ordered by the London High Court to pay McLaren over £9 million for breaching his contract. The ruling concluded a five-week trial stemming from Palou's decision to back out of two deals with the racing team. McLaren initially sought significantly more in damages, citing losses in sponsorship and performance-based earnings.

The dispute dates back to 2022 when Palou signed with McLaren before changing his mind. McLaren's chief Zak Brown said the result was appropriate, emphasizing they fulfilled all obligations. Palou was not ordered to pay for Formula 1 losses. Palou stated the court dismissed McLaren's F1 claims against him, showing they were “overblown.”

The bulk of the damages awarded to McLaren related to lost sponsorship revenue. Palou's change of heart resulted in McLaren having to scramble to find another driver. With Palou's dominance in IndyCar, McLaren argued they lost out on sponsorship payouts from NTT Data and General Motors. Palou is defending his IndyCar title this weekend.

Palou's decision to remain with Chip Ganassi Racing, rather than move to McLaren's IndyCar team, caused the breach. McLaren, in turn, signed Oscar Piastri for their F1 team. The saga underscores the complex contracts and high stakes within motorsports and the financial ramifications of driver movement.
