Ombudsman exacted Qatar Racing Champion Stakes revenge on Calandagan to win at Ascot, delivering a show-stopping performance as the 5-4 favourite. After being beaten by Francis-Henri Graffard's French raider 12 months prior, John and Thady Gosden's home favourite proved decisive with a blistering turn of foot in the home straight. William Buick guided Ombudsman past Bay City Roller and Calandagan to overcome Juddmonte International disappointment and affirm his status among the world's best middle-distance horses.
John Gosden praised the tactical execution, noting they avoided repeating last year's error of racing too far back, and highlighted the horse's adaptability to the slower ground. He confirmed future options include stud duty or a potential Breeders' Cup Turf run, citing the horse's suitability for such a challenge. Thady Gosden praised Ombudsman's resilience and enthusiasm, noting the York setback was weather-related and not reflective of his true form.
Buick acknowledged the quality of both Ombudsman and Calandagan, calling it a deserved reversal of fortunes, and left open the possibility of an American campaign, deferring to the Gosden team's judgment.
