Mercedes race start struggles prompt behind-the-scenes work

George Russell revealed that Mercedes are working intensively "behind the scenes" to fix their race start issues ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. Despite securing four front row lockouts across three Grands Prix and Sprint races this season, neither Russell nor teammate Kimi Antonelli have led after the opening lap, exposing what Russell calls their "biggest weakness."

Ferrari has dominated starts in 2026 thanks to their small turbo that spins up faster, giving them an optimal launch window. Drivers can only practice starts during free practice on Grand Prix weekends, limiting preparation opportunities. Russell emphasized that while practice time is restricted by regulations, the team is analyzing extensive data from the first three races to identify and correct their start deficiencies.

Speaking from Pirelli tire testing at the Nürburgring, Russell stressed that significant work continues despite testing restrictions. "There is a huge amount going on behind the scenes," he told Sky Germany, noting the team's focus on simulator work and data analysis. With Miami and Montreal featuring sprint races upon their return, Russell acknowledged the urgency: "It is full gas." Formula 1 resumes May 1-3 with the Miami Grand Prix, the season's second Sprint weekend.
