Mercedes Faces 'Quite Damaging' F1 Engine Rule Change

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has warned that potential changes to Formula 1's power unit regulations would be 'quite damaging' to his team's competitive position. The dispute centers on compression ratio limits, with Mercedes and Red Bull allegedly finding a loophole in the 2026 rules that allow higher ratios when engines are running at full temperature.

Several discussions have taken place between the FIA and F1's five power unit manufacturers - Mercedes, Ferrari, Honda, Audi, and Red Bull-Ford - after rival teams raised concerns about the alleged loophole. Wolff maintains that Mercedes has kept the FIA closely informed throughout the engine development process and received assurances that their approach complies with regulations. He criticized competitors for lobbying against Mercedes' engine performance.

Wolff emphasized that developing an engine over a long timeframe with specific lead times means sudden rule changes could significantly impact performance. The FIA aims to resolve the dispute before the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on March 6-8, seeking to avoid legal proceedings while maintaining the sport's competitive integrity.
