Rory McIlroy headed to the driving range after a second-round 69 left him slipping off the pace at the BMW Championship in St Louis. The Masters champion opened with a six-under 65 but could only add one shot Friday.

"I didn't quite hit it as good as I did yesterday," McIlroy told the Golf Channel, citing similar scoring conditions but poorer ball-striking. He praised the Bellerive crowds, recalling the 2018 PGA Championship atmosphere.

Wyndham Clark leads at 12 under after back-to-back 64s, the only player without a bogey. Gary Woodland sits one back, while JJ Spaun posted 10 under despite three late bogeys. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler recovered from an early bogey to reach three under, joint 25th.
