Mavididi’s late strike lifts Leicester past Blackburn

Leicester clinched a 1-0 victory at Ewood Park thanks to Stephy Mavididi’s 78th‑minute strike, handing the Foxes only their second win in 21 league games. The goal broke a bleak spell for a side relegated to League One for just the second time in its 142‑year history. Blackburn, who had secured safety with a win at Sheffield United, failed to convert early second‑half chances.

Eight of Leicester’s starting eleven were former Premier League regulars, yet they spent most of the first half on the back foot. Blackburn’s Harry Winks sent a cross that Harry Souttar met, only for Balázs Tóth to punch away. A corner scramble later saw Tóth again deny Jannik Vestergaard and Hamza Choudhury before Mavididi’s follow‑up found the net.

Blackburn’s manager Michael O’Neill suffered his fifth defeat in 15 games, a run that has kept his position under scrutiny as talks continue with the Irish FA over his dual role. Leicester’s Gary Rowett praised the late winner but noted the lack of celebration reflected the season’s misery. The result leaves Leicester still fighting to climb out of the relegation zone.
