Celtic manager Martin O'Neill is in hospital following a "small procedure," the club confirmed. The 74-year-old is expected to be released within the next day or two.

O'Neill recently signed a one-year deal to become permanent manager after two interim spells last season, which saw Celtic achieve a Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double. He was present for their new Premiership campaign opener on Monday, a 1-0 victory over Dundee.

Celtic's statement acknowledged speculation and thanked supporters for their well wishes, requesting privacy for O'Neill and his family. The Northern Irishman, who previously managed Nottingham Forest, returned to Celtic last October, 20 years after his initial successful tenure. He returned again after the departure of Wilfried Nancy and subsequently agreed to a full-time role with major shareholder Dermot Desmond.
