Joshua Zirkzee and Brenden Aaronson scored as Manchester United and Leeds played out an entertaining 1-1 friendly draw at Croke Park in Dublin, before Michael Carrick's side edged the penalty shoot-out 5-4.

On the eve of the new Premier League season, all the talk was about Marcus Rashford and his reintegration under Carrick, but the 82,000-strong crowd did not see the forward in a United shirt. Carrick instead gave a raft of youngsters a run-out. The side improved immeasurably after the introduction of Bruno Fernandes and new signing Youri Tielemans, combining effectively to offer Matheus Cunha shooting practice. Fernandes himself was played through by Luke Shaw, but his strike was flagged offside and he later hit the crossbar.

Of the senior regulars who started, Bryan Mbeumo caught the eye, teeing up Zirkzee for the opener. Dan James and Aaronson then combined for Leeds' equaliser. Daniel Farke's side have scored 10 goals in five pre-season outings. The game was decided by a tight penalty shoot-out, where both sides missed, before Noussaïr Mazraoui stepped up to convert the winning spot-kick.
