Loughnane Wins July Cup on Comanche Brave at Newmarket

Billy Loughnane continued his breakout season by steering Comanche Brave to a one-length victory in the July Cup at Newmarket on Saturday. The 11-1 shot, trained by Donnacha O'Brien, tracked Japanese raider Satono Reve before powering up the rising ground to hold off Venetian Sun, with Satono Reve a neck back in third. It marked Loughnane's third Group 1 win in England this year at age 20.

O'Brien revealed the plan was simply to let the four-year-old find his rhythm after a fourth-place finish in the Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot. Comanche Brave had earlier tested himself in Hong Kong behind Ka Ying Rising and won a Group 2 at the Curragh. The trainer indicated Group 1 targets only for the remainder of the season, with the Haydock Sprint Cup and potential international travel under consideration. Loughnane said the colt "never looked in trouble" and could even drop back to five furlongs.

Elsewhere on the card, Charlie Appleby's Al Hudaiba denied Aidan O'Brien's 8-13 favorite Abraham Lincoln by a short head in the Superlative Stakes, giving William Buick his second win of the day. In the Bunbury Cup, Ian Williams' six-year-old Aalto avenged last year's nose defeat to win by half a length under Buick, confirming his affinity for the July course.

Loughnane's ascent reshapes the British sprinting landscape — a 20-year-old with three Group 1s by July forces a reevaluation of the jockey hierarchy. Comanche Brave's versatility from five to six furlongs on fast ground makes him a rare tactical weapon for O'Brien, while Al Hudaiba's gritty win suggests Appleby has another two-year-old classic prospect. The sprint division now has a new star combination to measure against.
