Jurgen Klopp has reached an agreement in principle to become Germany's next head coach, with the German Football Association planning to announce the deal Saturday. Negotiations in New York produced a breakthrough Friday, and Klopp is expected to sign a contract running through the 2030 World Cup.

The former Liverpool manager must still finalize his departure from Red Bull, where he served as head of global soccer. His contract includes a special exit clause for the Germany job, and talks with CEO Oliver Mintzlaff should conclude by early next week. This marks Klopp's first coaching role since leaving Anfield in 2024.

Julian Nagelsmann stepped down after Germany's shocking World Cup last-32 exit against Paraguay. The 38-year-old had guided the team to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals before losing to eventual champions Spain.

Klopp inherits a program that has underperformed at consecutive major tournaments. His immediate task is stabilizing a squad that crashed out early in Qatar and stumbled at home in the Euros. The 2026 World Cup cycle begins soon, and Germany cannot afford another false start.
