British tennis player Fran Jones produced the upset of the Miami Open, defeating her idol Venus Williams in straight sets 7-5 7-5. The 25-year-old Jones, making her Miami debut, overcame illness and her childhood hero despite being born after Williams won her first Grand Slam title in 2000. Neither player held serve during the opening four games before Jones forced the decisive break to move 6-5 ahead in closing out the first set.

Jones revealed the profound connection she felt to Williams, explaining she had told the seven-time Grand Slam champion "goodnight every night" since the sisters adorned the wall of her childhood bedroom. Having attended Wimbledon at just five years old to watch them play, Jones said the experience inspired her tennis career. The British No.4 now faces American fifth seed Jessica Pegula in the second round.

In other results, Moise Kouame made history as the 17-year-old Frenchman became the youngest Masters 1000 match winner since Rafael Nadal in 2003. Kouame rallied from a set down to defeat Zachary Svajda 5-7 6-4 6-4, becoming the youngest player ever to win a match at the tournament. British men Arthur Fery lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas while Jacob Fearnley retired hurt after losing the first set 6-0.
