British star Jack Draper has been ruled out of the US Open as he continues to battle a bone bruise in his dominant left arm. After two dispiriting matches in the United States, Draper has concluded he needs more time to recover, according to sources close to the player. The news came only hours after world No 1 Jannik Sinner withdrew with a knee injury, while Carlos Alcaraz is set to return after four months out with a wrist injury.

The former world No 4, who has not played at a single Grand Slam this year, said he was in a "difficult place" after his first-round defeat by Martin Landaluce at the Cincinnati Open, admitting he was struggling with the mental fatigue built up during 15 months of battling serious injury. Since Wimbledon, the 24-year-old has altered his strings and racket while tweaking his service motion, saying: "There's a level of chronic pain that's always with you."

Annabel Croft said withdrawing may be a good decision because a Grand Slam is "absolutely brutal" over seven back-to-back matches. "He needs to go away and try to fix his body," she said, noting Draper has reached the US Open semi-finals.

Former player turned coach Ryan Harrison added that the 11-month tour, slowed courts and longer physical rallies make staying healthy harder than ever.
