Ireland Names Nine Debutants for Japan Test

Andy Farrell has rotated heavily for Ireland's Nations Championship meeting with Japan in Newcastle, handing Sean Jansen a first cap at number eight and naming three further debutants on the bench in Connacht props Billy Bohan and Sam Illo plus Ulster back row Bryn Ward. Only three forwards — Tom O'Toole, James Ryan and Jack Conan, who shifts to blindside — survive from the 33-31 comeback win over Australia in Sydney.

Tadhg Beirne assumes the captaincy for the first time from the start while hooker Ronan Kelleher reaches his 50th appearance. Behind the scrum, Jamie Osborne moves to full-back with Jimmy O'Brien and Stuart McCloskey the lone backs retained; Robbie Henshaw partners McCloskey at centre and Jacob Stockdale takes the wing. A fresh half-back axis of Ciaran Frawley and Craig Casey will steer the attack.

The selection reflects a clear eye on next weekend's showdown with New Zealand in Auckland. Tour skipper Dan Sheehan, Tadhg Furlong, Jamison Gibson-Park, Sam Prendergast, Garry Ringrose and Hugo Keenan are all rested, while Robert Baloucoune (hamstring) and Jeremy Loughman (concussion) remain sidelined.

Farrell is effectively running two teams inside one tour. The Japan fixture becomes an audition for fringe players to stake World Cup claims, yet the real measurement arrives in seven days when the first-choice XV faces the All Blacks. Depth will be tested before quality.
