Ian Watson has secured his return to Super League coaching, taking an assistant role at champions Hull KR for the 2026 season. The move sees Watson reuniting with Willie Peters, who will depart after next year to coach the new PNG Chiefs NRL franchise in 2028.

Watson arrives after leaving Huddersfield Giants by mutual consent in July 2024, following successful spells that included a Challenge Cup final appearance in 2022. His earlier work at Salford Red Devils saw them reach the 2019 Super League Grand Final. A stint in America with Seattle Seawolves provided fresh perspective before this Super League comeback.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Watson praised Hull KR's community culture as 'first class' and highlighted the club's succession planning. While confirming he wants to return to head coaching eventually, he emphasized timing and opportunity will determine his next step. The assistant role allows him to rebuild relationships within Super League after his American experience.

Watson's arrival strengthens the Robins' coaching setup ahead of a crucial 2026 campaign. His proven track record at Huddersfield and Salford provides valuable experience alongside Peters during his final season before the NRL opportunity.
