Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has defended his decision to leave Anthony Gordon on the bench against Barcelona, revealing the winger was ill on the morning of the Champions League last-16 first leg. Former Magpies striker Alan Shearer questioned why the key forward didn't start what Howe had called the club's biggest game in years, drawing support from Roy Keane.

Newcastle drew 1-1 with Barcelona at St James' Park, with Gordon entering as a 67th-minute substitute. Shearer argued that even feeling unwell, Gordon should have played, stating it would take 'something extraordinary' to keep him out of such a crucial match. Howe clarified that Gordon was willing to play but, after consultation with medical staff following his absence from training, the decision was made to start him from the bench.

Gordon has been deployed in various attacking roles this season due to injuries to teammates, scoring 10 goals in the Champions League but only four in the Premier League. Howe praised Gordon's competitive character and adaptability, noting he's currently in his best form this season despite the challenges. The manager also provided fitness updates, confirming Yoane Wissa is available for the Chelsea match while Bruno Guimaraes is expected back after the international break.
