Harvey Vale has been called up to the Republic of Ireland squad for the World Cup play-offs, a move confirmed by manager Heimir Hallgrimsson. The 22-year-old QPR midfielder, capped up to under-20 level for England, switched allegiances after his FIFA ratification last week. Hallgrimsson, who secured a contract extension running until Euro 2028, revealed he contacted Vale 'over a year ago' to suggest the former Bristol Rovers forward consider playing for Ireland. 'He expressed a desire to play for Ireland,' Hallgrimsson stated. 'His development at QPR has been growing, and it's a perfect time to bring him into the squad.' Vale's inclusion follows the heroics of AZ Alkmaar striker Troy Parrott, who scored both goals in the 2-0 win over Portugal and a famous hat-trick in the 3-2 Budapest victory that kept Ireland's World Cup hopes alive.

Ireland faces the Czech Republic in the play-off semi-final in Prague on Thursday; a win would set up a final against Denmark or North Macedonia on March 31 for a 2026 World Cup spot.
