Pep Guardiola has turned down the chance to replace Gennaro Gattuso as Italy head coach, according to Sky in Italy. The FIGC met with Guardiola over three days in Barcelona, with Paolo Maldini and Leonardo presenting a project to rebuild Italian football after failing to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup.

FIGC officials were willing to adjust their budget for Guardiola, who listened attentively but declined due to personal reasons beyond football. Alternative candidates include Roberto Mancini and Andrea Pirlo. Guardiola is a free agent for the first time in a decade after ending his 10-year association with Manchester City, where he won 20 trophies with a 70.8 per cent win ratio.

Following his departure, Guardiola stated he would take a break from coaching to spend time with family, saying he lacks the energy for daily club management. He previously turned down the England job in 2024, though he has expressed interest in international management as a potential middle ground offering better work-life balance.
