George Williams neck injury puts Warrington future in doubt

Warrington Wolves captain George Williams could have played his last game for the club after suffering a neck injury requiring surgery. Head coach Sam Burgess confirmed the injury, sustained during last week's loss to Catalans Dragons in France, will need surgery within a fortnight. Williams is in his final contract year and has already confirmed his return to the NRL with the Dolphins in 2027.

Recovery timelines remain unclear, with Burgess stating the rehabilitation period could range from three months to a full year. He cited Alex Walmsley's similar neck surgery which required 12 months. With just over five months remaining in the Super League season, Williams may have already worn the primrose and blue for the final time.

The injury also throws a wrench into England plans. New head coach Brian McDermott recently confirmed Williams would remain England captain for the World Cup in Australia starting October. Now McDermott faces his first major decision depending on the halfback's recovery timeline.
