EFL Rejects VAR Challenge System for Championship

EFL clubs have voted against introducing a VAR challenge system for managers in the Championship, despite proposals from PGMO, English football's refereeing governing body. The decision came after clubs received a demonstration of the system at last month's annual meeting and provided their feedback.

As a result, the EFL will continue without VAR next season, maintaining only goal-line technology in the Championship. This decision stands in contrast to the Premier League, where VAR remains despite growing opposition from fans. A recent survey by the Football Supporters' Association found that 75 percent of fans oppose VAR use, with 91 percent saying it has harmed goal celebrations.

Meanwhile, football's lawmakers have extended VAR's powers to include second yellow card checks and corner-kick reviews starting this summer. However, these new protocols will be optional rather than mandatory, with officials emphasizing that corner checks must not delay play and will only address obvious errors.
