Challenge Cup Final Could Leave Wembley

A club-led strategic review has recommended the Challenge Cup final potentially move from its traditional home at Wembley Stadium. The review, commissioned by the Rugby Football League, cited attendance figures that haven't topped 65,000 since 2017. The final has been held at Wembley for all but one year since 1929, making this a significant departure.

The suggestion is part of a 144-point list from the strategic group. Stakeholders will review the findings in the coming weeks. The review also proposed other changes, like neutral venue round-of-16 matches in a Magic Weekend style. Furthermore, a 'Community Shield' style fixture between the Grand Final and Challenge Cup winners was also suggested.

This potential move reflects a broader trend of sports organizations reevaluating venues for major events to maximize attendance and revenue. The recommendations also include maintaining a 14-team Super League, with future expansion to 16 teams if financially viable. An eight-team playoff series is also on the table.

Sky Sports will broadcast every Super League game live in 2026. This includes the play-offs and the Grand Final. The review emphasizes the importance of sustainable player supply and financial stability before any expansion. This strategic shift could significantly reshape the rugby league landscape.
