Catterall eyes unification after clinching vacant WBA welterweight crown

Jack Catterall says he feels better than ever after seizing the vacant title and the WBA regular welterweight crown in Egypt, beating Shakhram Giyasov by unanimous decision. The 32‑year‑old, now 33‑2, views the win as a springboard toward unification and remains keen to face Rolando Romero. He also eyes Benn or Haney.

Romero, 17‑2, was ordered to fight Catterall within 180 days from May 23 but has stayed idle since his May 2025 knockout of Ryan Garcia in New York. Reports suggest he may take an interim bout in August, a move Catterall calls “not ideal” because it risks injury before the title clash. He hopes the interim bout works.

Catterall floated other opponents – Lewis Crocker‑Paro winner, Conor Benn, Devin Haney or a rematch with Garcia – signalling a willingness to shape his own path. With no unified welterweight champion yet, his “under‑dog” mindset could force marquee fights and add belts to his résumé. He believes the division is ripe for consolidation.
