Aston Villa suffered a thumping 4-0 defeat at Brighton in their Premier League opener. Unai Emery's side conceded four goals in an extraordinary 31 minutes before half-time. Brighton took the lead through an own goal after Pau Torres' poor pass.

Maxim De Cuyper latched onto the error to score, before Georginio Rutter's cross led to another De Cuyper goal. Jack Hinshelwood scored a quickfire double either side of half-time. New signing Joao Gomes received a straight red card following a VAR review for a kick out at Rutter.

Villa were without Ollie Watkins, who was left out amid Saudi interest. The defeat caps a turbulent summer at Villa Park, with key departures including Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ezri Konsa and Lucas Digne.
