Atletico Madrid have agreed a deal in principle with Tottenham to sign Cristian Romero. The package is in the region of £34.2m (€40m) with add-ons, and includes a 15 per cent sell-on clause. Atletico have been long-term admirers of the Argentina international, and Spurs were expected to allow their captain to depart if the right offer arrived.

Romero's Spurs deal runs until 2029. The 28-year-old was sent off twice last season during the Premier League relegation battle and missed the end of the campaign with a knee injury. He has made 124 appearances for the club over five seasons, scoring 12 goals and being shown four red cards in the Premier League.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Tottenham summer special podcast, ex-Spurs midfielder Jamie O'Hara said: "He's a bit of a liability. When he plays, he costs us games, points and red cards. I just think his attitude towards the board... it's, 'All right, thank you, and we're going to move on'." O'Hara added that Spurs should accept the fee and move on, noting that selling to European clubs yields lesser fees than Premier League sides.
