Arsenal's Alessia Russo and Beth Mead surprised members of the Gunner Girls mentoring program during the launch of their new documentary series, calling it "great to be part of their journey." The Gunner Girls initiative, featuring nine novice girls mentored by senior players, highlights the club's deep community roots. Founded in 1987 through a partnership with Aylesbury Ladies, Arsenal has long prioritized grassroots development, a value Russo emphasized: "Our world is crazy these days, but when you get to do stuff like this, inspiring the next generation, it means a little bit more."

The Emirates-based Arsenal Women team, currently competing in three tournaments, continues to balance elite play with community engagement. Russo, with 100 appearances for the club, reflected on the program's significance: "The staff really care and the players really care." The Gunner Girls project, filmed last year alongside Arsenal's Champions League and Euros triumphs, underscores the club's commitment to female role models. "Having their backing and belief is massive," noted coordinator Billie Graham, who added the players "never had the opportunity for girls-only teams when they were younger."

Arsenal faces Tottenham in a pivotal WSL North London derby on Saturday, a match both teams aim to build on after a 0-0 draw in November. Mead praised Arsenal's fans: "They follow us home and away... it'll be fun." The rivalry, amplified by Sky Sports coverage, carries weight as Tottenham's Martin Ho transforms them into a "formidable force." Russo noted the derby's emotional stakes: "When I came to the club, I heard from Leah [Williamson], Lotte [Wubben-Moy] and Kim [Little] about what this game means."

The Gunner Girls program, featuring Arsenal's Communities women and girls coordinator, Billie Graham, aims to empower young players through mentorship. As the team prepares for the derby, the intersection of elite sport and community legacy remains central. "They had never played in a team before," Graham said of the participants, "but we put them together with four of our Arsenal Women first team players to capture and follow their journey."
