Karl Burke's Alparslan delivered a stunning performance in the Watership Down Stud Too Darn Hot Greenham Stakes at Newbury, defeating highly-fancied rivals Albert Einstein and Zavateri. The 9-1 outsider, ridden by Clifford Lee, was allowed to dictate the pace and repelled late challenges from the two big guns to win by a length.

Alparslan's victory has firmly established him as a leading contender for the 2000 Guineas, with trainer Burke expressing confidence that the mile distance question has been answered. The colt had previously finished behind Zavateri in the Dewhurst Stakes but showed significant improvement on his third start of the season. Zavateri, last year's Group One winner, ran on well for second despite meeting trouble in running.

Meanwhile, in the Dubai Duty Free Finest Surprise Stakes, Convergent secured a welcome big-race win for Burke and Lee, who was making an emotional return to the saddle after a serious quadbike accident. The victory sets up ambitious plans for both horses, with Burke considering entries in major spring targets including the English and Irish Classics.
