George Russell secured his second win of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Austrian Grand Prix, holding off Max Verstappen by 1.6 seconds after starting from pole position. The Mercedes driver capitalized on Kimi Antonelli's retirement in Barcelona to chip away at his teammate's championship lead, with Antonelli completing the podium in third place.

Russell's victory marked his first triumph since the Melbourne season opener, ending a difficult stretch for the 28-year-old. Starting ahead of Verstappen and Antonelli on the medium compound tires, Russell maintained his advantage through multiple wheel-to-wheel battles between his rivals behind him. Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton engaged in a thrilling duel, with the Red Bull driver eventually claiming second place ahead of his former title rival.

A virtual safety car period triggered by Carlos Sainz's power failure shifted strategies dramatically. While Hamilton and Antonelli pitted, Verstappen stayed out longer but emerged 10 seconds behind Russell. The Dutchman couldn't recover the deficit despite closing in during the final stages. Oscar Piastri finished fourth, 19.823 seconds off the podium, while Lando Norris and Isack Hadjar completed the top six.

Antonelli retains the championship lead with 171 points, though Russell moves to second place on 131 points, just 40 points adrift. Hamilton sits third on 125 points, leaving the title fight wide open with Mercedes holding a strong hand heading into the summer stretch.
