Aberdeen coach search heats up as Horneland stall opens door for Schwarz

Aberdeen's hunt for a new head coach is intensifying after the potential appointment of Eirik Horneland stalled. The 50-year-old Norwegian faces uncertainty due to personal issues, derailing what appeared to be a near-finalized move to Pittodrie last month. Scottish Premiership games live on Sky Sports highlight the club's immediate focus, but the vacant managerial position remains unresolved. Peter Leven has held interim charge since Jimmy Thelin's sacking in January, winning just one of eight league games, leaving the Dons eighth in the standings. They have, however, reached the Scottish Cup quarter-finals. Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack revealed last week the appointment was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances.

Sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel is now actively pursuing alternatives, with former New York Red Bulls boss Sandro Schwarz emerging as a prominent candidate. The 47-year-old German, known to Pfannenstiel, previously managed Mainz, Dynamo Moscow, and Hertha Berlin before leaving New York in October. The club insists it won't rush or compromise the search, emphasizing the need for the right fit.

Tony Docherty has returned as an assistant to support Leven. Aberdeen's upcoming fixtures include a Scottish Premiership clash against Celtic and a Scottish Cup tie against Dunfermline Athletic.
