World Cup Transit Funding: $100M for Host Cities

The federal government announced $100.3 million in transit funding for World Cup host cities to handle the influx of visitors. The Federal Transit Administration will distribute the funds, which must be spent within one fiscal year from the July 19 final. New York and New Jersey will receive the largest share at just over $10 million as co-hosts of the championship match.

Congress approved the funding in a January spending bill as cities prepare for an estimated 10 million international visitors. The distribution is based on stadium capacity and number of matches, with Dallas and Arlington ranking second due to hosting nine matches - the most of any city. The funds aim to upgrade public transportation systems to handle the massive crowds expected during the tournament.

Inadequate federal funding for security remains a critical concern, with officials warning of potential cancellations without $70 million in Homeland Security funds. Recent cartel violence in Mexico and Middle East tensions add to security challenges. The World Cup begins June 11 in Mexico City, with the U.S. opening matches on June 12 and the final in New York/New Jersey on July 19.
