World Cup Bus Prices Slashed After Fan Outcry

New York has slashed shuttle bus prices to the World Cup stadium in New Jersey following a fierce backlash from fans. Supporters traveling to MetLife Stadium from Grand Central Terminal or the Port Authority bus terminal initially faced an $80 fare, but Governor Kathy Hochul announced the price has been reduced to $20 to make the tournament "as accessible as possible."

England fans were particularly vocal about the travel costs, with one lifelong supporter telling the Press Association that $150 train fares from New York were "ridiculous" and that getting to the stadium was costing more than attending the Euro 2024 final in Berlin. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill also reduced NJ Transit return journeys from $150 to $98, with tickets going on sale Wednesday. Sherrill blamed FIFA for the high costs, saying the state had "inherited an agreement where FIFA is providing zero dollars for transportation."

MetLife Stadium will host several high-profile group stage matches including Brazil vs. Morocco on June 13 and England vs. Panama on June 27, along with knockout games and the World Cup final. FIFA said it was "surprised" by Governor Sherrill's comments regarding transportation funding.
