WADA Delays Trump Olympic Ban Decision Until After World Cup

The World Anti-Doping Agency has postponed a decision on banning government officials from major sporting events until after the 2026 World Cup. The WADA executive committee met Tuesday and will consider the controversial rule in September, two months after the tournament concludes in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

This delay pushes any potential conflict with President Donald Trump and other U.S. officials past the World Cup, where the U.S. is co-host. The rule, if adopted later this year, would likely take effect before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The U.S. has withheld $7.3 million in dues since 2023 to protest WADA's handling of cases involving Chinese swimmers and other issues.

The U.S. hasn't paid its dues since 2023, and if that continues, the new rule could place Trump and U.S. lawmakers on a banned list for Games in their own country. However, doubts remain about whether an anti-doping regulator could actually prevent any of them from attending the Olympics.
