Ukraine's sports minister, Matvii Bidnyi, has strongly criticized FIFA president Gianni Infantino for suggesting a potential lifting of the ban on Russia's participation in international youth football. Infantino's comments, made on Sky News, were deemed "irresponsible" and "infantile" by Bidnyi, who emphasized the ongoing conflict and the loss of life in Ukraine. He highlighted the deaths of Ukrainian athletes and the politicization of sport by Russia.

Bidnyi’s remarks come in response to Infantino's suggestion that the ban, imposed after Russia's 2022 invasion, "had not achieved anything." Infantino argued that allowing Russian youth teams to compete in Europe could be beneficial. However, the Ukrainian sports minister underscored that Russia's actions continue to cause immense suffering. The Ukrainian Association of Football shares this sentiment, opposing Russia's return.

The debate over Russia's sporting ban is ongoing, with the International Olympic Committee previously recommending that international sports federations allow Russian athletes to compete at youth levels. Even with these recommendations, many remain skeptical. The UEFA Congress next week will be an opportunity to discuss the issue further. However, many in European football remain wary of lifting the ban for fear of backlash.
