UEFA Rejects Red Card Law for Covering Mouths

UEFA will not issue red cards to players who cover their mouths while speaking to opponents in its club competitions. The governing body confirmed it will not adopt FIFA's World Cup rule, which aimed to prevent unsportsmanlike conduct. This decision applies to the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League starting next season.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino had pushed for the harsher penalty, seeing players like Paraguay's Miguel Almirón and Ecuador's Piero Hincapié sent off during the World Cup for the offense. UEFA's stance indicates a different interpretation of sportsmanship, allowing referees discretion for such actions without an automatic dismissal.

Despite an incident involving Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni and Real Madrid's Vinícius Júnior in a Champions League match, UEFA opted against the strict rule. While they will use VAR for incorrect corner kicks, the mouth-covering law will not lead to sendings-off in their tournaments.
