United States men's national team captain Tim Ream described the team's mood as "shock" following their 2026 World Cup exit at the hands of Belgium. The U.S. was eliminated 4-1 in the round of 16 after a performance riddled with errors, a stark contrast to their earlier group stage success.

Ream told ESPN that the locker room reaction was one of disbelief, struggling to comprehend the drastic drop in performance. "It's trying to put together and understand what had just gone on because it was polar opposite of of the way we had played up to that point," he stated. The team faced significant criticism, particularly after star player Christian Pulisic sustained an ankle injury and could only watch the collapse from the sideline. Pulisic also dealt with a calf injury earlier in the tournament, finishing without a goal and only one assist.

Despite the disappointing end, Ream emphasized that the entire team underperformed, not just individuals. "I don't think anybody had their best game by any stretch," he admitted. He also highlighted the team's broader goal of inspiring soccer growth in the U.S. "How can we inspire and get more people to love this game?" he questioned. Ream believes that, despite the final result, the team's performances and wins, including back-to-back World Cup victories for the first time since 1930, contributed positively to the sport's popularity in the United States.
