Spain Fans Condemned for Anti-Muslim Chants at Egypt Friendly

Spain fans were repeatedly warned to stop anti-Muslim chants during Tuesday's friendly against Egypt at Espanyol's RCDE Stadium in Barcelona. The warnings came after sections of the crowd whistled Egypt's national anthem before kick-off and chanted 'Musulmán el que no bote' -- roughly 'If you're not jumping, you're a Muslim' -- during the first half. These chants continued when some Egyptian players kneeled and kissed the ground at halftime.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) quickly condemned the behavior on social media, stating they 'stand against racism in football and condemn any act of violence inside stadiums.' Egypt is a predominantly Muslim nation where Islam is the official state religion. The match served as a World Cup warm-up for both teams, with Spain facing Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia, and Uruguay in Group H, while Egypt prepares for Belgium, New Zealand, and Iran in Group G. Forward Lamine Yamal, who started for Spain and is Muslim, has Moroccan heritage and observed Ramadan recently.
