The Portland Thorns pulled off a stunning 2-0 victory over the Seattle Reign despite being reduced to nine players in their NWSL season opener at Providence Park. Portland received two red cards in the match - the first time in 14 years of rivalry that either team had been sent off - yet still managed to secure the win.

Cassandra Bogere received two yellow cards just 56 seconds apart in the ninth minute, while Reyna Reyes was sent off in the 57th minute for violent conduct after video review showed she pulled Madison Curry's hair. Despite playing 9-v-11 for the final 33 minutes, Portland held firm. Goals from Pietra Tordin and Reilyn Turner gave the Thorns the lead before they were even reduced to 10 players.

The victory marked Robert Vilahamn's first win as Portland's head coach, who joined the team less than 48 hours before the season opener. The 23,321 fans in attendance witnessed what many players called an unprecedented situation, with Tordin noting it was the first time she'd ever played with two fewer teammates.
