The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) has named Rafael Márquez as the new head coach of the national team, succeeding Javier Aguirre. Márquez, 47, takes the helm with a focus on continuity and development leading up to the 2030 World Cup. He previously served as Aguirre's assistant from August 2024.

The FMF stated the appointment is part of an "orderly transition" to "strengthen development, and tackle upcoming commitments." While Mexico was eliminated in the Round of 16 in the recent World Cup, the team showed improvement compared to their group stage exit in 2022. Aguirre departs, having concluded his third World Cup cycle, leaving behind a "solid legacy of hard work, identity, and competitiveness."

Márquez brings a decorated playing career, including five World Cups, a 1999 Confederations Cup title, and multiple Gold Cup and Liga MX titles. His coaching experience includes managing Barça Atlètic, Barcelona's reserve team, for 82 matches. He is expected to make his managerial debut in the September-October international window.
