Haaland's strike was initially ruled out for offside but awarded after a lengthy VAR check determined Patrick Dorgu played the striker onside.

However, Enzo Fernández was in an offside position and attempted to play the ball in front of Martínez. The defender called the decision "an injustice," criticizing referees for making "unacceptable" mistakes despite extensive pre-season rule briefings. "We have to go home with this injustice," Martínez told Sky Sports.

Carrick echoed the frustration, stating officials led by referee Michael Oliver explained Fernández did not interfere with play. The United head coach dismissed the explanation, noting Fernández "thrown himself at the ball six yards from goal." Carrick warned it is "worrying" if that interpretation represents how the game is officiated, insisting the offside interference was "as obvious as it gets." The Premier League Match Centre confirmed VAR deemed Fernández did not play the ball.
