Lindsey Heaps' career has come full circle. The USWNT captain is expected to debut Saturday for Denver Summit FC, the NWSL expansion team that began play in March, marking a return to the Colorado city where her unprecedented journey began.

Fourteen years ago, Heaps left Golden, Colorado, at age 18 to sign with Paris Saint-Germain, becoming the first American woman to skip college and turn professional out of high school. The decision was unthinkable in 2012, when a second U.S. women's pro league had just folded and the NWSL didn't exist. Heaps' father, Mark Horan, recalled her unwavering drive: "When she had her mind set on something, she did it."

Heaps returned to the U.S. in 2016 with the Portland Thorns, won NWSL MVP in 2018, and captained the USWNT to the 2019 World Cup title. She later spent four years at Olympique Lyonnais, winning a Champions League. Now 31, she embarks on an improbable bookend to a trailblazing career.

The NWSL approved Denver as its 16th franchise in December 2024. Ownership led by Rob Cohen and general manager Curt Johnson aggressively pursued Colorado natives like Heaps, Mallory Swanson, and Sophia Wilson. Heaps insisted the move wasn't just sentimental: "I want to make sure it's right for me... I want to be in a place where I am competing for that team" ahead of next summer's World Cup.
