Jürgen Klopp has been named Germany's head coach following Julian Nagelsmann's resignation after the team's disappointing World Cup exit. Klopp signed a contract through the 2030 World Cup and was presented at a news conference on Friday, calling it a "big honor" and saying the national team "brings us Germans together like almost nothing else can."

Klopp faces an immediate challenge with four Nations League games in 11 days against the Netherlands, Greece, and Serbia in September and October. Former defender Per Mertesacker joins as the federation's new managing director for sport starting in January, overseeing men's national teams and youth development after eight years running Arsenal's academy.

Klopp has not managed since leaving Liverpool in 2024. He served as Red Bull's Head of Soccer from January 2025 and worked as a World Cup analyst for Magenta TV. His release from Red Bull was secured by the German Football Association making a €1 million donation to the Wings for Life foundation and agreeing to play three internationals in Leipzig by 2030.

Germany's round of 32 loss to Paraguay marked a third successive World Cup disappointment after group stage exits in 2018 and 2022. Nagelsmann resigned after three years, having led Germany to the Euro 2024 quarterfinals where they lost to eventual winners Spain.
