Portugal coach Jorge Jesus expressed disappointment over Cristiano Ronaldo’s international retirement, stating he had asked the captain to continue. Ronaldo, who fell out with Jesus over playing time, announced his departure after 23 years of service. The decision came just before squad selection for UEFA Nations League matches.
Ronaldo’s last appearance was a 1-0 win over Wales on Sept. 24, following a 30-day suspension for walking out on the team. Jesus, who previously coached Ronaldo at Al Nassr, emphasized the player’s legacy as a global and national icon. Ronaldo captained Portugal to Euro 2016 and Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.
He holds the record for most international goals (146) and appearances (234) for men’s football. Despite apologizing to teammates, Ronaldo did not reconcile with Jesus. The coach praised Ronaldo’s influence on Portuguese youth and his massive social media following, calling him a legend of the national team.
