Eighteen-year-old Lucas Herrington never imagined his first MLS season would include matchups against football royalty. The Colorado Rapids defender has started every game since January 2026, quickly learning from encounters with global stars that most players only dream about facing.

Herrington's biggest test came during Colorado's 30th-anniversary clash with Inter Miami CF, where over 75,000 fans watched Messi score twice including the decisive goal in a 3-2 defeat. 'It was tough -- I had to do everything by myself,' Herrington said about the move from Brisbane Roar, but having former Arsenal player Rob Holding as his center-back partner has accelerated his development.

The teenager's progression mirrors Colorado's revival, reaching the U.S. Open Cup semifinals for the first time since 1999. His composure showed on Socceroos debut in March, starting in a 1-0 clean sheet victory over Cameroon. Currently training with Australia's extended World Cup squad, Herrington awaits the final 26-man roster announcement on June 1.

Despite competing against established defenders, Herrington's rapid adaptation to MLS suggests the Socceroos have found a promising young talent ready for football's biggest stage.
